Latest Approaches to Composite Caravan Construction

New approaches to caravan construction are leading to drastic improvements in the thermal insulating properties of the body. Composite sandwich panels made using fibreglass sheet (GRP), extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam and PVC inserts, enable a durable, lightweight construction that reduces energy costs and boosts comfort, ensuring the body stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

This approach replaces traditional timber frame constructions and offers a number of benefits over it.

Eliminate Moisture-Related Issues

Wood, which is heavy, absorbs moisture and is susceptible to mould, can now be replaced by a lightweight composite sandwich structure. In a composite sandwich panel construction, the body cannot absorb moisture. This eliminates timber rot and other moisture-related deterioration. Each layer of material in a composite sandwich panel resists water absorption when excluding timber and plywood from the layup. This is a crucial consideration for caravan construction, as moisture in the air inside the body is a given due to activities like cooking, showering, cleaning and simply breathing.

Improve Thermal Performance

Composite panel constructions eliminate thermal bridging from poorly fitted insulation. The homogeneous closed-cell composition of XPS foam and the composite panel lamination process ensures thermal bridging is prevented. XPS foam provides long-term thermal resistance, even when wet and at low temperatures. XPS also maintains its thermal and mechanical performance for long periods of time, meaning it’ll continue to perform at a high standard over the life of the vehicle.

Reduces Weight

Weight reduction is a key trend in caravan construction. Technological advancements and new methods using alternative materials like XPS foam, GRP sheeting and PVC inserts are helping manufacturers achieve drastic weight reductions while at the same time making improvements in durability and performance.

By replacing heavy timber with lightweight composites, the savings in fuel costs are massive. Every kilo saved results in less energy needed over its lifetime. This makes composite caravans more eco-friendly as a result and offers huge cost savings for the consumer.
